THREE NAGA

Potato Head

Bali, Indonesia

The "Three Naga" sculpture eloquently embodies the profound interplay between nature and human spirituality, as envisioned through Balinese cosmogony. According to ancient legend, the Earth, after its creation, faced imminent self-destruction. To avert this catastrophe, Brahma metamorphosed into Naga Anantaboga, who undulated through the soil to bestow fertility; Dewa transformed into Naga Basuki, who swam through the waters to eradicate illness; and Siwa assumed the form of Naga Taksaka, who soared through the winds to re-establish natural equilibrium.

These rattan entities, adorned with recycled plastic hair, were meticulously crafted with a Balinese community of weavers, melding time-honored techniques with contemporary artistic vision. Visitors are invited to traverse the serpentine forms of these dragons, immersing themselves in an auditory experience by connecting with the extremities, where they can hear compositions inspired by the elemental domains of each deity.
